Chapter 21. Quinn

“Here we are,” Caspian announced, halting in front of a random, inconspicuous door.

“Here? Doesn’t look like a party.”

He nodded as he rang the bell. “House party. Quiet on the outside, smashing on the inside.”

We only had to wait for a couple of seconds before someone swung the door open and invited us in. The low hum of a tune and a heavy bass thudded through the narrow hallway, but the full force of the party didn’t hit us until we stepped into the living area.

What looked like a normal place had been transformed into a makeshift party. The couches were pushed to the side to open up room for dancing and any flat surface imaginable was being used to hold drinks. Tables, dressers, windowsills, anything.

There were more people crammed in this space than I thought possible. Everyone was dancing and swaying to the music, all grouped in their own bubbles. If I’d arrived on my own, it would’ve been very unlikely to join in somewhere.

“Over there!” Caspian waved me along and we drummed through multiple groups. Some girls waved at my coworker while some guys caught him and extended affectionate greetings.

He was popular. I could tell.

“Tony!” he shouted, trying to grab the attention of a group. “Hey, Tony!”

A young man with neat hair and a cute bow tie turned around. “Yooo, my man.”

“What’s up?”

They gave each other a kiss on the cheek and voiced how glad they were to see each other. An enthusiasm that society deemed inappropriate for straight men.

As Caspian went on to greet the rest of the group, I just kind of lingered on the edge of their circle. I couldn’t remember the last time I had to go up to a group I didn’t know and it was terrifying.

Once my coworker had done his rounds, he waved me in. “Quinn, come here. This is my best mate. Tony, this is the new girl from work.”

“Yo, what’s up?” His friend extended his fist for a little bump.

What was I supposed to reply to that? Did ‘what’s up’ even warrant a reply? I had no clue.

I shot him my best smile, hoping to blend in. “I’m good, what’s up!”

“You the new girl, eh?”

“Yeah, I am” I replied.

“Nice, nice. Come, join us. Meet everyone.”

Everyone?

“Yo, yo, yo. Everyone, this is Quinn, Caspian’s new colleague. Quinn, this is Matty, Leandra, Tivo, and that gorgeous girl over there is Nini.”

I nodded, trying to catch all the names so I could put them to the faces. “Matty, Leandra, Ti... I’m sorry, what’s the last two names?”

“Tivo and Nini.”

“Tivo and Nini,” I repeated, catching the eye of the girl at my right and earning a pearly smirk from her. I managed to return a smile and gave a general wave to the group. “Nice to meet you all.”

“I’ll get some more drinks!” Tony announced. “Beers?”

“Aayy!” all of them cheered.

I hesitated. “Umm, I’m not going to drink enough to keep up with rounds. I can just get my own.”

“No, it’s BYOB.”

“BYOB?”

“Bring your own booze, but there’s plenty from the host too,” Tony explained.
